Sneak Peek {Laundry Room Update}

It has been slow going in my laundry room...but here is a preview of some of what is going on...

After {one more trip} to Lowes I should be almost finished and ready to assemble the updated room. I'm chomping at the bit to get this project finished!

My Favorite Things {July 2012}

It just dawned on my that July is almost over...it's almost time for school to start {seriously?!}

In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy summer...the heat...the air conditioning...the heat...

I had a free photo coupon from shutterfly and started looking back at some recently uploaded pictures...lots of pictures of projects I had going on, almost NO pictures of my children, family, dog even...I think have to go back to my old rule "take one picture every day."

I figured I should share the things that excited me this month:

We discovered that there is a Trader Joe's that is only 1 1/2 hours away. I am way too excited about this, I think TJ's might be slightly over rated, but I still LOVE IT! I hate that I don't have one a few minutes/short drive away. I did try the cookie butter, you should too. I can't wait to make a trip back!

I also figured out that I hate spackling, but I LOVE spackling when I use an old credit card (really a room key from a hotel works the best because it's skinny!) It makes it much easier (for me) because it's not very bulky, it's easy to clean...I swear I should market this-maybe I'd become a millionaire!

In working on the laundry room update, I also decided it was a good time to clean out our dryer vent...it's one of those funny things that I get strange satisfaction from....it's hard to believe how much gunk gets stuck in the vent...we purchased the lint eater last winter when we were having a dryer issue and burned out the motor on our dryer...it ended up being the vent was so clogged air almost couldn't get out. Talk about a huge fire hazard! So, we are trying to be better about cleaning out our vent, you should too...it was worth every penny to buy the lint eater (I'm sure it would have cost more to have had someone come out and do it for us!)

I am also loving my baby's toes. I can't believe how big he is getting and how much he has changed. He's into everything. It's exhausting. But he refuses to walk, so his feet are still soft and pure...it's only a matter of time...and every time we try to make him stand up, ha, he sits down. Go figure.

So these are my favorite things. Any suggestions of things I should check out?

Keeping Kids Happy {Fort Kit & a dog bowl}

I've seen this idea around Pinterest for a while...and made a Fort Kit for my nephew earlier this summer...I personally despise when my sofa cushions & blankets turn into "forts"...I am no fun.

A friend reached out after seeing my previous post and asked if I could make her one...ask and you shall receive (isn't that how the saying goes?) Hopefully this will save her some headaches...
The kit includes two bed sheets with special ties, attachment devices: suction cups, and two kinds of clothes pins, lighting: two flashlights, and rope. I stuff everything into a t-shirt bag...easy!

I also thought it would only be fair to share the reality of getting anything done with young children...Part of the tent kit includes adding ties to the sheets so you can use clothes pins or rope to drape sheets (and save your blankets!) while I was sewing the ties on the sheets--all hell was breaking loose. Rule #1 for Crafting with Children: only craft without your children around--in other words: during nap time. #CraftingFail?
The baby LOVES the dog's dish...in this picture water is splashed up the walls (notice the drips) it is ALLLL over the floor and the rug AND the baby...who is crying because I took away the water bowl after he splashed half of the water out. At least it was only water?

My latest project {baby quilts for TWINS!}

Not too long ago, a facebook friend had commented about wanting to have a unique theme for her unborn twins' room, so I offered to make her custom quilts...after some back and forth about the design, we selected fabric, and I started sewing...

I should add that sewing with two children can sometimes pose to be a challenge. I am so thankful that whenever possible my hubby gives me a chance to focus. I try to break the project into small sections (cutting, applique, borders, pinning, quilting, etc.)

The first quilt has a silhouette applique of Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn on a raft. I added some detailed "freehand" quilting so the silhouette didn't just look like a huge grey blob. I also quilted a leaf design-from a method I pinned on Pinterest.

The second quilt is a silhouette of a boy fishing. I added some grass, tree branches/leaves, and water ripples so the silhouette didn't appear to be floating in space.

I hope the new owners of these quilts love them until they are just some tattered threads.

The backing fabric is from Michael Miller's Indigo Red line. The small blue border was from my stash (probably a Moda Marble?) and the quilt tops were a plain cotton (one from fabric.com and one from JoAnn Fabrics.) The greys are Quilter's Linen in Gray (top) and Mottled Gray (bottom).

Quick Bathroom Update {A little paint goes a long way!}

Last week I finished with my powder room update, complete with paint, diy board & batten and a diy vanity. And here is the complete breakdown of everything I did, and what it cost.

This week my husband was away with work, so I figured I should do something else creative...I'd been thinking of doing some sort of stencil in my bathroom, or even possibly stripes...yesterday, I decided on stripes. It was SUCH an easy update. It took about an hour to tape everything using a level...and about an hour to paint three coats of a soft cream paint.

The secret of painting a crisp line is to "seal" the tape using either mod podge or your base color of paint (I used the dark color and then painted over with the new cream color.) The results were excellent. The only "problem" was a small area along the left corner/wall where some of the paint came up with the tape. It took about 1 minute to touch up this morning! I also added a new bead of caulk along the shower surround. To do this, I added blue painters tape and ran a thin bead of caulk, smoothing with my wet finger. So easy!

What a difference, right? It's hard to believe I was able to do this in one evening!

More projects?

Although I have two quilts underway...and just mailed two quilts yesterday...I think I'm going to start some more projects around the house. My laundry room has never been painted. It looks so sad & white and blah...I'm thinking yellow? And I got this idea in my head to paint stripes in my master bathroom...so that's what I'm going to do...hopefully I wont regret that idea!

I'll be sure to report on my progress...

What's on deck...

I've been busy making two semi-matching quilts for twins...their Momma came up with an adorable theme.

After a few sewing sessions I have them just about finished. I'm in the final stages (washing them, adding labels, and making sure all the rogue threads are trimmed and stitching looks good!)

I'm hoping to get these in the mail very soon! I can't wait to share them with you!
My #2 helper, LOVES the washing machine...

bathroom update {breakdown}

Here is the breakdown of what I did, where I bought it, and what I paid for it:

Board & Batten: There are a million tutorials floating around about how to do this. I referenced a few, I only nailed in my boards, just in case I decide to take them down some day. It is SUPER easy. I decided to replace my baseboard trim with 1x6" mdf so the boards would all smoothly go together. Some people just miter the ends at an angle and but them up to the existing trim. I found it was helpful to use the old trim to cut the new trim. It is amazing what a little (or a lot) of caulk will do. TOTALLY changes the look.

Vanity: After doing lots of research and searching around the Internet, I ultimately decided to alter Ana-White's Farmhouse plans to fit perfectly in the space. I could have made it a wider, but it's pretty bulky, I didn't want the space to feel smaller than it already IS. This took maybe an afternoon with some assistance from my hubby to construct....we did buy a Kreg Jig {to build strong joints AND hide the screws} for this project, and I love this thing so much that I can't wait to build something else! It was so easy to use and LOOK AT THE FINISHED PROJECT! {This did set us back 140 beans, but I think this Kreg jig will be an investment in the end...I can't wait to see what I build with it!}

I also did a lot of research about counter tops. I ultimately decided I didn't want to pay a fortune, and even though this counter was small, most of it would be covered by the vessel sink and I just could not justify paying $400 (no joke) that the local stone yard quoted me...I thought about trying my hand at tiling, but that was going to cost a good amount of money too. I ultimately settled on the wood for I think $8...no joke. I think it looks great. I did stain it and cover it with some poly...and I think the booboos over time are only going to add character!

My husband really loved the Minwax gray stain (I had to buy it at Home Depot.) I wanted to paint it a color (bright yellow?) but in the end, I decided it IS his house too, so I went with the gray stain. I'd never stained anything before, I learned the important lesson to really stir it well and to only stain in a very well ventilated area--holy stink! I finished it with a few coats of polyurethane spray.

Sink: I picked the rectangular vessel sink from Amazon. It was a decent price, I wanted something "farmhouse-ish" but not round (I don't know why!) I did run into a mistake because I purchased the "recommended mounting ring" from Amazon, but since it's a rectangular sink I didn't need the mounting ring...but DID need a drain....and at that point I didn't want to spend much more...so I found a simple drain from Lowes that worked perfectly that was about $20-30. I did NOT want a stopper because I'm realistic that A) they cost more and B) I have boys and don't want to risk an overflow situation. It works perfectly.

Paint: The top portion was painted with Valspar's La Fonda Jalapeno. I love saying it. La Fonda Jalapeno. La Fonda Japaleno. The bottom was painted with a crisp white, left over from the previous owners, labeled, trim paint. (Free works for me!)

Hardware: I decided I wanted this bathroom to have all oil rubbed bronze finishes. I purchased the awesome faucet from Amazon. Although it was the cheapest faucet I could find, it was solid metal and in my opinion appears to be great quality. I'll let you know if I have any issues. I also updated the toilet with a matching toilet lever. No I didn't need to do this, but I hated that all the finishes were different before! I installed it myself, with some guidance from my hubby, who sweetly wanted to only help when I asked because he knows I like saying I did everything myself. {thanks honey!}

Mirror: (for now) is an old antique that my mom had in her basement a million years ago, I never even hung it up prior, so I'm glad it has a nice new prominent life. I might decide to paint it at some point, but right now I'm loving the honey colored antique-ness.

When I decided to update this bathroom, I'd been wanting an air compressor and a nail gun for a while (yes, I did ask for one for Christmas, but ended up with a fancy sewing machine instead, so I'm not complaining.) So for Father's Day, my husband decided to buy me one. Lucky me.

I was in the midst of making this project when my husband brought this home, so although I am really scared of it, I mastered the nail gun. It made it so easy to add my boards...

Faucet-Amazon: $59.99
Vessel Sink-Amazon: $79.95
Drain-Lowes: $20 or $30
Toilet Lever-Amazon: $13.16
MDF & Wood (Vanity Base & Board & Batten)-Lowes: $115
Paint-Lowes: $15.24
Stain & Wood for Vanity Top-Home Depot: $23
Screws (Kreg)-Lowes: $3.58
Caulk Keeper Caps for the open tube of caulk (GENIUS!)-Lowes: $1.78
TOTAL: $341.70
*The Kreg Jig was $140 at Lowes and the Air Compressor & Nail Gun were about $200, but we'll just look at those as DIY investments for now....

I did buy a new garbage can, it's huge and beat up looking it, but I do love it, $20 from TJMaxx, as well as some hand towels $5 and soap $5. I'm pretty sure I looked at buying vanities that cost more than this entire project...

bathroom update {the loooong road, getting things done}

I figure it's only fair to share about my new bathroom if I make sure to keep it real...this project took a REALLY long time. It could have taken much less time, but alas, children aren't always the best "helpers"...I waited what seemed like forever for the vessel sink to arrive, and once that was here everything else was done, my husband saved the day and did all of the plumbing. My son was scared to use the bathroom with no working sink and plastic sheeting covering everything but the toilet...again, this thing was in disarray for waaaay too long.

But rather than whine and complain about it, I'll just show you some pictures:

Here is what I was starting with: (well except that these are the prior owner's things, but you get the idea)
(the toilet REALLY is in there, see it?)

I started by (blindly painting the bottom half of the wall white. I pulled out the existing trim & then added new baseboards PLUS the new board & batten:

The sink served as an excellent storage vessel:

Once all of the board & batten was installed, I needed to remove the existing sink. It was a task I dreaded, so after waiting hoping magically it would disappear (it didn't) I took it out myself! I had to use a screw head (from a set with a removable head) and a set of pliers. Holy cow, hard work, probably the hardest thing in this entire bathroom. Who knew 4" awkwardly installed screws would be such a pain!?

I constructed the farmhouse vanity with some help from my hubby...his awesome math skills also came in handy trying to figure out the perfect spacing for the shelf!
Picking the paint/color scheme was also a project:
I considered painting the vanity green.

Yes, I actually did pick up a million paint chips, no I did not do anything crafty with them!
I stained the vanity (and parts of my legs & hands) using Minwax Grey Stain. I found it really important to stir the stain well (I did not the 1st coat) I reused the same $1 chip brush without covering it all 3 coats...

Our garage got out of control during this project. Baaaad.
My hubs cleaned it once the bathroom was finished, that's how bad it was....

While the stain was getting situated outside, the paint went up inside:

 I also started shopping for accessories, most went unused and back to the store!

Here is a slighty better iPhone photo of the vanity:

And here is the final product:

 I still need some kind of wall art, I'm considering installing shelving above the toilet (which is almost invisible in all of these pictures, I swear it really is a bathroom!) I also want to hang up some kind of towel hook, but I'm not certain where...

Easy iPhone "case"

Pinterest does it again....I saw something I decided to make. This time it was so easy, just a matter of making a design, printing it, and cutting it out...I slipped the paper into a clear case {I usually buy my cases at overstock.com for $5 or less} that I had already and what a HUGE difference!

I created 4 designs that I could switch out...
Which do you like most?

*I did attempt to laminate a cover but that made the paper too thick to fit inside the case! boo! This did get splashed with some water, and probably needs to be reprinted, but for now it will do...

bathroom update {before & after}

On a whim, I decided our half bathroom needing some updating. Of course I wasn't wanting to spend a ton of money, but I hated the shape of the pedestal sink...and was also having the urge to add some color into our very beige home.

Laying outside on the hammock, I envisioned something bright and sunny. Like looking up into a canopy of fresh spring leaves...I'd pinned a few color pallettes that I liked...

I decided to update the sink. I knew I wanted something with a little storage. I also wanted to be able to put a soap dispenser without it wobbling (like the previous pedestal sink!) I ended up altering a plan from Ana White to create a simple farmhouse vanity...and also pinned her post about a new gray stain that I instantly fell in love with.

I had also pinned quite a few tutorials of how to install board and batten, I figured this room was so small, it would be perfect to attempt this project.

Here is what the house looked like when we decided to purchase it...after moving in we really hadn't changed it at all. And never really decorated it much either.

What a huge difference, right?! Stay tuned for the details...

Crafting A.D.D.

I've had a lot going on lately, summer has been a perfect mixture of busy & relaxing...but I have been suffering from some serious crafting A.D.D. I've been sewing, quilting, building and painting...embroidering, fixing up, shopping and returning, and overall NOT cleaning. You know how it goes (or am I the only one who operates like this?

Luckily I have family visiting next Monday...which means I have a little pressure to have the house in some semblance of a presentable state. Ha. We'll see what gets done.

In the mean time, I have a million things I want to show, okay maybe not a million, but quite a few.

A few weeks ago I had a chance to get out of town and visit my brother Christian & his wife Lauren. We always have a great time together. Lauren & Christian celebrated their anniversary the day I headed home...the same day as Lauren's birthday...and they had just moved. I decided to make her a little something...a Happy New House Anni-birthday gift, if you will. This is what I came up with:

A monogrammed pouch (for diapers or stuff.) I used the very simple pattern from Jamie at That's My Letter. I also made Lauren a simple little wallet to match. (I had made her a diaper bag as a shower gift when he first son was born--she's pregnant now again--just to clarify why I'd be giving her a diaper clutch when her son is almost 2....)

I also monogrammed her some towels, since I have had my new sewing machine for half a year and am JUST learning HOW to do this:

I also included some hand towels and wash cloths just to make a full set.

While we were visiting it was great to see the kiddies play so nicely together. My eldest is turning into an opinionated mess {as most 3 year olds tend to do?} so it was nice to see he was fairly pleasant to his cousin and not a complete bully like he is with his baby brother.

It was VERY hot while we visited. So I thought I'd include some of my favorite pictures from our visit:

And here is another towel that I made, monogrammed of course:
