{Proud to be an American}

The holidays have come & gone, but today I am a borderline wreck filled with lots of emotion. {And not just because I'm 30!}

I am so thankful to have my husband "home" safely from Iraq. He returned from a deployment right after Christmas in 2007, which seems so long ago and like it was just yesterday mixed into one.

I've mentioned it before, but during my husband's deployment I met some of the most amazing, heroic, impressive, top notch women in my life. Thankfully, during my husband's service he was only asked to deploy once, but many of my friends were not so fortunate. And again, I go back to them being the most amazing women in the world. I just don't know how they dealt with a deployment again (and again, and again, and again, in many cases!)

I bring this up because today is the anniversary of my dear friend's husband's death. I very clearly remember receiving the news over the phone on this day just a few years ago. I suppose death is never easy, but this was someone I knew personally. And I knew his wife and daughter well. And so today, I shed tears for them and I have a heavy heart knowing what they've been through. I think of this brave man often, not just today; he was a Soldier, a father, a husband, a son, a hard worker, a quiet guy with a great sense of humor and had an infectious smile. He was so handsome! I wish so badly that he was here with us still and that circumstances were different.

I also celebrate this family. They embody what our country stands for, and I am proud and humbled to know them. My friend has truly made lemonade out of lemons, she continues to be one of the most amazing mothers I know, and she keeps her husband's spirit alive, something that I hope all Americans do for our fallen servicemen and women.

My son, "saluting" the American flag.
So, today I think of my friend and her family as they move forward. I think of all the families of the fallen and I ask that you remember them too...
