Entryway Console Table {DIY}

I've been working on this project since seeing an awesome console on Pinterest. I'd been wanting to put something in the little nook by our front door since we moved in...this table is perfect:

The plans I used from sawdustgirl.com were really awesome. I did make my table base only about 12" wide. I also made the top differently; cutting the staggered scraps of 2x4 and 2x6" wood at a 45 degree angle, and using 1x2" around as trim.

Here is a better picture of the top. The top was definitely the most challenging parts of the project because I was using up scraps from our wood pile. It went together really easily until ONE piece of 2x6 was a little wide and caused the rest of the table not to line up. I ended up having to taking the top of the table apart and then join two pieces together (see in the top row, 3rd from the left!!) I used a mixture of kreg drill + screws, and nail gun, nailing the tips of the boards together. 

The stain color is Kona. I'll have to dig out pictures from the original stain--vinegar and steel wool. It looks like it had been attacked by a pumpkin.

Welcome, Fall!

My motivation & available free time have been low...This back to school business is throwing me for a loop...and taking me out of the house more it seems.

In preparation for a meeting regarding Early Intervention services for my little guy, I decided to pull out some fall decor before the team arrived. Going from the basement storage area, pulling up random decorations, and trimming down a piece of burlap from my stash, I quickly pulled together a Fall entry.

The candles are sitting on piece of old pallet from the garage (ghetto? or unusual? did I cross that fine line?) Some old fall signs from JoAnns, mini pumpkin candles from Pottery Barn from a few years ago, the large leaves are from Current from when I lived in Colorado, at the top you can see my book page wreath from a loooong time ago.

The owl family I made with my almost 4 year old son. The body of the owl is made from a toilet paper roll, the body and wings from cupcake liners. These came together really quickly, and might be my new favorite decoration. I'm a sucker for hand made cuteness. {Idea from the Oct 2012, Family Fun Magazine.}

This took maybe 15 minutes, but instantly brought fall into our house. I did this a few weeks ago when I felt like it was too early to pull out the Halloween decorations, but now that it's October, I need to pull out the rest of the goods.

I have been trying to get back to doing something crafty every day...my sewing machine has been out, but just today I put it away so I could dust the dining room table and put things away that I've slowly taken from my sewing room and brought to the dining room. It seems like it's wrong to have set up shop in the dining room, but it makes it possible to quickly sew a little while cooking, or watching the children. Does any one else have an assigned space for crafts or work, but end up working somewhere else? I keep telling myself some day my children will be big enough that I can actually USE my sewing room while they are elsewhere {school?}

Fall

We're having a glorious fall here in WV. I have a very love hate relationship with fall. I enjoy sweaters, warm cozy blankets, pumpkin flavor (the real thing) as much as the next lady, although I hate the cold. I hate snow, winter, icy roads. So I grieve the loss of summer and look forward to the warm weather again.

I think part of my fall funk has been my disappearance from blogland. I probably have hundreds of other blog posts to read, but I just can't bring myself to sit in front of the computer for any length of time. I did recently figure out how to remove the THOUSANDS of duplicate photos from my hard drive crash last summer.  (If you have a mac and need to remove duplicates check out the Duplicate Annihilator app.)

 I have been doing some crafting. I have so much to share and show you, but I also have bathrooms that need cleaning, an entire house that needs dusting, and lots of floors that need vacuuming. I've pinned a few nifty printable charts and I'm hoping that might help me stay on top of my cleaning.

In my last post I shared that my family welcomed it's 48th member. I made this quilt for the new little guy. I hope he enjoys snuggling with it's flannel-goodness as he grows.

And yesterday, this little guy started pre-school. It feels like he was just born. Since my last post, this guy turned THREE. I'll have to share a few things I made to help celebrate. In the meantime, I'm happy he LOVES his binoculars that he made at school. Too cute!
